Doctors of Optometry are primary health care providers who specialize in the examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases and disorders of the eye, visual system and associated structures, as well as the diagnosis of related systemic conditions.

Comprehensive eye examinations include:

  • detailed patient history
  • visual acuity
  • pupil evaluation
  • extraocular motility function
  • color vision testing
  • examination of peripheral visual field
  • analysis of the accommodative and binocular visual system
  • retinoscopy and refraction
  • examination of the external ocular adnexa by biomicroscopy
  • intraocular pressure measurement
  • examination of the health of the internal ocular media and fundus by dilated fundoscopy

If clinically indicated, additional tests may be performed. These tests may include, but are not limited to, Optomap, exophthalmometry, keratometry, gonioscopy, Amsler grid testing, visual field testing and retinal photography. Optical Coherence Tomography has emerged from a new imaging modality to a standard ocular diseases diagnostic tool. RTVue is an ultra-high speed, high resolution OCT retina scanner used for retina imaging and analysis with high clarity in a fraction of seconds.

Macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and dry eye are common eye conditions managed and co-managed by optometrists.
